What is a Dental Implant?
Your natural tooth consists of the root of the tooth buried below the gum line, and the white enamel covered crown that’s visible above it. A dental implant is also made of two parts: the titanium component buried invisibly below the gum, and on top of it the porcelain crown which is matched to the colour of your own teeth. Titanium is extremely strong, resistant to corrosion and well tolerated by the body.
When the implant is placed in the jaw, the bone and gum heal around it in a process that can take between three and six months. Once integration has been established, we fix a healing abutment to the implant, so the gum is well formed and healed around the new implant. The abutment (connector) can be made from titanium, or from zirconium, which is tooth coloured. The final step is to attach the porcelain crown on top of the implant.
Benefits of Dental Implants
- There is a very high success rate (92% of implants still function well after 10 years).
- It’s a conservative treatment – there is no grinding down of adjacent teeth.
- They feel and look just like your own teeth.
- No other form of tooth replacement feels or functions better, you can speak with ease and smile with confidence.
- Dental Implants never decay (however good oral hygiene must be maintained to keep the surrounding gums healthy).
- They restore proper chewing and full strength of your bite so you can eat what you like.
- They prevent jawbone shrinkage and further bone loss – implants stimulate the jawbone and help prevent bone shrinkage, which occurs when your teeth are missing.
- Jawbone preservation supports your facial muscles and prevents them from sagging and making you look prematurely older.
The Dental Implant Process
The process for receiving dental implants includes multiple steps. Each case is different, and you may not need tooth extractions or bone grafting.
A typical dental implant process includes:
1
CBCT scan
2
Tooth extraction if needed
3
Bone grafting if needed
4
Implant surgery
5
Wearing a temporary crown or temporary denture from your dentist during the healing period
6
Healing abutment placement 2 weeks before the final crown
7
Receiving your final dental crown or denture.

Dental Implant FAQs
Dental implants have a long, well-documented history of success. Most implant root fixtures are made of titanium. Your jawbone fuses to the biocompatible “root” during a process known as osseointegration. Although titanium allergies are rare, if you have a metal allergy or sensitivity or prefer an alternative to titanium, metal-free zirconia implants are available.
Dental implants are usually more expensive than alternative treatments for replacing missing teeth. They require one or more surgical procedures and can take 4-12 months to complete. Occasionally it can be difficult to control the shape of the gum around the implant, particularly when replacing a single front tooth.
Dental implants can last 20 years or longer, sometimes, if well looked after, for life. They outlast other forms of tooth replacement, including a partial denture or a dental bridge. Despite a success rate of 95%, some dental implants fail. Some contributing factors to dental implant failure include poor oral hygiene habits, uncontrolled diabetes, smoking, low bone density, and chronic gum inflammation.
Dr Najeeb Hussain is an extremely accomplished and experienced dental implant specialist and has a success rate for placing implants over 95%.
